Jason Donovan set to return to Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at the London Palladium this summer
| By Jade Ali
Fans of the iconic musical, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, are probably more than familiar with the name Jason Donovan, the Australian-born actor who portrayed Joseph in the famous 1991 West End revival. And now, with the announcement today that Donovan will be returning to the London Palladium for the newly reimagined production, fans have something to be excited about. This time around, Jason Donovan is set to star as the Pharaoh alongside the previously announced, two-time Olivier Award-winner Sheridan Smith as the narrator for a strictly limited, 11-week run starting 27 June 2019!
Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is widely regarded as a modern classic, and this new production by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber is especially highly anticipated thanks in large part to the production's casting choices. The announcement that BAFTA and Olivier Award-winner Sheridan Smith would star as the narrator was received with elation and the announcement that the one-and-only Jason Donovan will be returning to take on the role of the Pharaoh is likely to be just as well received.
Jason Donovan bio
Jason Donovan made his first significant stage appearance in 1991 as the titular character of Joseph, also at the beloved London Palladium, where the show enjoyed a sold-out, 18-month run. This particular production went on to have a best-selling soundtrack album and a Number 1 single. Almost 30 years later and it still remains one of the most successful revivals of all time and fans are no doubt anxious to hear Donovan belt out the Pharaoh’s much-loved number, ‘Song of the King’.
In true Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat fashion, a huge star is always announced for the role of Joseph, and whilst it was a fundamental stage performance for Donovan, he had already made a name for himself. It was through his role as Scott Robinson in Australian series Neighbours, which went on to be one of the highest-rating shows in the UK, that saw Donovan rise to international fame. After a collaboration in 1988 with his Neighbours co-star and soon-to-be international popstar, Kylie Minogue, on the duet 'Especially For You', he released his chart-topping, debut album, Ten Good Reasons, a year later. It went on to become the UK's biggest selling album in 1989 and spawned an astonishing four No. 1 singles on the UK charts.
After his portrayal of Joseph in the hit revival, which earned him an Olivier nomination, he went on to star in The Rocky Horror Show, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Priscilla, Annie Get Your Gun, The Sound of Music, The King’s Speech and Million Dollar Quartet. These big-name productions speak for themselves, but Donovan didn’t stop there. He also appeared on TV in such hit shows such as I’m A Celebrity and Strictly Come Dancing. Jason Donovan also continues to play sell-out tours all across the country.

About Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat
The story of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is told almost entirely through song, with a little help along the way from the Narrator (Sheridan Smith). It follows the story of Jacob’s favourite son, Joseph, and his eleven brothers. Jealousy blinds his brothers and invokes the hatred that leads them to sell Joseph off into slavery. Joseph soon finds himself in jail where he discovers he has the ability to interpret dreams, which soon lands him right at the feet of the troubled Pharaoh (Donovan). After helping the Pharaoh and becoming his right-hand man, Joseph is eventually reunited with his family.
The multi-award-winning musical, Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat, first began as a concept album in 1969. In the fifty years since then, it has become one of the most successful and well-known musicals of all time. It’s a highly popular and heartwarming family show, and with this brand-new production, it is destined for even greater success, solidifying the place it already holds in the hearts of many.
