The Roundhouse, built in 1847, is a Grade II listed building originally built as a steam engine repair shed, before becoming a performing arts and concert venue in 1964. The flexible auditorium has an impressive capacity, at 3,300 standing and 1,700 seated.

The History of the Roundhouse

First a railway repair shed and then a warehouse for several years, the building was abandoned just before WWI. It stood empty for 25 years before being transformed into a theatre by playwright Arnold Wesker.

The Roundhouse underwent a 10 year long, £27million renovation, reopening in June 2006 with a production of Fuerza Bruta.

The Roundhouse Accessibility

The Roundhouse offers step-free access to each level of the theatre, as well as all bars and toilets. A passenger lift services each level is located close to the accessible toilets. All performances are wheelchair accessible, with dedicated wheelchair spaces available in the main space. Staff are on hand to assist with entry and seating where needed.

A hearing loop system is available for those who need it, as well as a limited number of wheelchairs available to book. The Roundhouse is able to provide a quiet space during your visit.

The Roundhouse Safety Policy

Yes, you can bring a bag to the Roundhouse, although it's recommended that you leave big bags and suitacases at home. A cloakroom is avalible to store baggage for a small charge. Please advise that this space is usually full by 8.30pm during Winter months. 

The Roundhouse is a flexible venue which offers seated and standing configurations. The layout of the auditorium is dependent on the performance taking place. The main auditorium has a capacity of 1,800 standing or 503 seated. Some exhibits, such as concerts, offer a mixture of seats and standing. It is advised you check the events seating plan before booking.

The venue has a cloakroom that's open for most events in the Main Space, at a charge of £3 per item.

All performances will have a doors opening time and/or a start time confirmed close to the date of the performance. The Box Office is open 2 hours prior to the doors opening time.
