A Brief History
From West End production to global phenomenon, MAMMA MIA! is Judy Craymer’s ingenious vision of turning ABBA’s timeless songs into story-telling magic. To date, the production has been seen by over 65 million people in 16 different languages across 50 productions. It has grossed an astonishing $2 billion at the box office. In 2011, it became the first Western musical ever to be staged in Mandarin in the People’s Republic of China.
MAMMA MIA! originally opened in London at the Prince Edward Theatre on 6 April 1999, before transferring to the Prince of Wales Theatre in 2004. The musical re-opened at the Novello Theatre in 2012, where it recently celebrated its London 20th birthday on 6 April 2019. MAMMA MIA in London has been seen by over 9 million people. It has played over 9000 performances and has broken box office records in all three of its London homes.
MAMMA MIA! is also known for being a box-office movie hit. Produced by Judy Craymer, MAMMA MIA! The Movie, starring Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan, is the highest-grossing live-action musical film of all time, whilst its sequel is the highest-earning musical sequel in history.
Thank You For The Music
- MAMMA MIA! is the 5th longest-running musical in West End history.
- 400 metres of Lycra are used to create the Super Trouper outfits for MAMMA MIA! in London That’s a lot of Lyrca!
- MAMMA MIA! The Musical has all of your favourite ABBA songs, including ‘Dancing Queen’, ‘Mamma Mia!’, ‘Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)’ and so, so many more!
- With all those ABBA tunes, it’s no wonder that Phyllida Lloyd directed both MAMMA MIA! the movie and the original West End and Broadway productions.
- To date, there are nine cast recordings worldwide. All of ABBA’s hits can be listened to in German, Dutch, Spanish, Swedish, Korean, French, Japanese, and Chinese.
- It took Judie Craymer 10 years to persuade Andersson and Ulvaeus to create the musical we know and love.
- Craymer's was inspired by ‘The Winner Takes It All’ to create the musical, the song started the process of creating a strong female lead character…that character would eventually become Donna.

Novello Theatre Best Seats and Seating Plan
Known as the Strand Theatre between 1913 and 2005 (despite not being one of the three theatres that are actually located on The Strand - Adelphi Theatre , Savoy Theatre and The Vaudeville Theatre,) the Novello Theatre (then named the Waldorf Theatre) was built as a pair with the Aldwych Theatre in 1905.
The theatre is currently named after Welsh composer Ivor Novello who lived in the flat above. However, with the building already having undergone an impressive five name changes (rivalling Snoop Dog and Kanye West’s penchant for monikers) we wonder how long it will stay that way!
The theatre has played host to several successful productions, including the 1941 premiere of the black comedy Arsenic and Old Lace, which enjoyed a run of 1337 performances, and the 1955 comedy Sailor, Beware!, playing for 1231 performances. After a ten year love affair with No Sex Please, We’re British, The Novello Theatre welcomed MAMMA MIA! in 2012, where it still plays today.
What are the best seats at Novello Theatre?
The auditorium has four levels - Stalls, Dress Circle, Grand Circle and Balcony.
With steep rakes (meaning audience members sitting in front will not hamper your view) the Stalls offer unobstructed views close to the onstage action. For a budget friendly option, Slips in the Dress Circle are a great choice. They offer a side-view of the stage, but still allow you to enjoy the production without restriction.
The Grand Circle seats are a similar price to the Slips in the Dress Circle. They are one level up from the Grand Circle, so slightly further away from the stage, but they offer front on, unobstructed views.
Up another level and you’ll find the Balcony, these are the cheapest seats in the auditorium, however due to the steep rake the view is unobstructed (if slightly distant). If you’re lucky enough to have long legs, you may wish to sit in the other sections of the auditorium due to the Balcony’s smaller leg room.

Interview with the cast of MAMMA MIA!
Residing in the gorgeous Greek island of Kalokairi 6 days a week, the cast members of MAMMA MIA! are no strangers to the sun. However, the blistering heat isn’t for everyone. Jake Bailey, who plays Pepper in the show much prefers a ‘British’ summer, ‘I can’t deal with the heat and sun!’, in fact everyone we spoke to in the cast; Gemma Goggin (Rosie), Mazz Murray (Donna) Miles Henderson (Sky) Meg Hateley (Sophie) all agreed that the predictably unpredictable British weather was best! So, it’s a good job, that their mythical paradise is located at the Novello Theatre in the heart of the West End, where a cooler climate is almost guaranteed!
Another thing that the tight-knit company all agree on? The importance of crisps at a picnic! When asked to describe their alfresco must-haves, a variety of ingredients were mentioned, from the highbrow (Gemma: strawberries, prosecco, salami…) to the, not quite Michelin star (Miles: cocktail sausages, tinnies...) the one thing that reunited all the dream feasts were crisps (or be it black truffle ones in Gemma’s case…)
Food and drink are an important aspect of their lives (and they certainly need it, leaping, dancing, and singing in the most energetic show in the West End eight times a week!) dark chocolate is an interval must-have for some, whilst twister ice lollies and ice creams are the only way to cool down for others. Meg can be seen drinking a large Diet Coke to quench her thirst, whilst her fictional mother, Mazz, prefers cool beer and larger (after work, of course!)
Just like Sophies three possible dads, there are a few differences between the cast members. Some have elaborate, and expertly timed pre-show rituals (Jake: I have a fair few, I always go say hello to wigs while I fill my bottle up while "Honey Honey" is on, me and the boy's fist bump before walking on, I’ll always do a clap and prayer before "Voulez Vous" and before "Does Your Mother Know" I will siren, pray and blow the nose because a runny nose in that number is the last thing anybody wants!) whilst others are a tad simpler (Miles: I get into costume.)
We caught up with the cast to discuss all things BBQS, on-stage mishaps, and, of course, MAMMA MIA!
