We Will Rock You returns to London!

2012 marked the tenth anniversary of the Queen musical, We Will Rock You at the Dominion Theatre, now 21 years later the show is back home for a limited 12 week run at the stunning London Coliseum. We Will Rock You was created by English-Australian comedian, author, playwright and director Ben Elton and the legendary band Queen and opened at the Dominion Theatre in May 2002. Having rightfully earned its place on the top ten list of London's longest musicals, it won the 2011 Olivier Audience Award for best musical, the only award voted for entirely by the public. It was the second public vote award received by the show after winning the WhatsOnStage best new musical award in 2003.

A number of international productions of the show have followed, and We Will Rock You has now been seen by more than  20 million people in 28 different countries including  Ireland, Germany, Australia, Canada, Russia, Spain, Japan, South Africa, Switzerland, Austria, New Zealand, South Korea, Singapore, Thailand and Hong Kong. Is the one who calls himself Galileo that man? And can he help them break free?

Packed full of Queen’s greatest hits the We Will Rock You songs include’ Radio Ga Ga’, ‘I Want to Break Free’,’ Somebody to Love’, ‘Killer Queen’, ‘Under Pressure’, ‘A Kind of Magic’, ‘Only the Good Die Young’, ‘Crazy Little Thing Called Love’, ‘Who Wants to Live Forever’, ‘Don't Stop Me Now’, and ‘Another One Bites the Dust’, as well as ‘We Will Rock You’, ‘We Are the Champions’ and, of course, ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’.

Interview with We Will Rock You’s Lee Mead

West End royalty Lee Mead is taking off his technicolour dream coat in favour of a more subdued look in the role of Khashoggi in We Will Rock You. After more than two decades of playing the likable leading man (from Legally Blonde’s kind-hearted and encouraging Emmett, to Wicked’s loveable and naïve Fiyero), Mead is swapping his angelic curls for a bad-boy buzzcut.

“It’s nice for me to be playing something a bit different and interesting. I’ve always played the nice guy characters and roles the last 20 years [in theatre and] on TV as well.” Mead said.

In contrary to what others may think, he doesn’t smash guitars or punch walls to get amped up before stepping into this new, darker role, but rather can be seen relaxing with a mug of hot water and honey. We chatted to Mead to discuss his pre and post-show rituals, and his favourite song to perform in a musical that boasts 24 smash-hits...here's what he had to say!

We Will Rock You is set to return to the London stage in 2023. The smash-hit musical featuring songs from the legendary rock group Queen will return for a 12-week season next summer at the London Coliseum. Written by Queen and Ben Elton, the show, which is set in a dystopian future, has been seen by over 20 million people across 28 countries. We caught up with Ben Elton, who enthused: “We need to be back in London and we’re going to be back in London!”.

We Will Rock You originally opened at the Dominion Theatre in 2002 and ran until 2014, becoming one of the longest-running musicals in West End history. “It will be 21 years. We opened on the 14th of May in 2002. I know that very well because it’s my wedding anniversary day and for twelve years my wife had to accept that the most important thing was We Will Rock You. We’ll be opening in early June, so almost on our 21st birthday.” Ben told us.
