London Theatre Review: Heathers at the Theatre Royal Haymarket

Heathers starts off as any American teen drama would. There are the popular kids, the jocks, the geeks and those in between. It is a story that everyone knows and can be seen in a raft of dramas for the Netflix generation (Riverdale13 Reasons Why). And it also happens to serve as the premise for Heathers The Musical. But then, a new kid comes to school and there is where things get interesting. The show quickly takes a sharp turn and delves further into the same dark humour that made the original 1988 film a cult classic.

Heathers is a show for the Netflix/social media generation, as shown by the decision not to invite critics to review during its initial run at The Other Palace. The producers let the fans make up their own minds and share their thoughts through social media. This paid off, and the show has gained a legion of fans, many of whom turn up to the theatre in the same bright colours worn by the Heathers. Carrie Hope Fletcher plays the lead and is a prevalent user of social media, which helps to keep the fans engaged.

The score is full of vibrant and memorable tunes with fun and witty lyrics that will make you want to listen to the soundtrack straight away. Every member of the cast is outstanding, playing their roles perfectly and full of an infectious energy that permeates the auditorium.

The story is a bit of a stretch at times, but it is a comedy after all. It’s clear to see how the original 1980s film gained cult status akin to such films as The Stepford Wives and The Witches of Eastwick. At the end, there is a lament from the students, wishing to just be seventeen and not have to worry about all the politics of school. They just want to enjoy life while they’re young with no real worries or responsibilities. A fine message – don’t worry about trivial matters and live your best life.

Heathers The Musical is booking at the Theatre Royal Haymarket until 22 November 2018.

Don’t miss your last chance to see this critically acclaimed production before the venue gets taken over by Take That Musical, The Band. Hurry and book your tickets to Heathers now while stocks last!
