What’s new about this Sister Act The Musical production?

Sister Act The Musical first premiered in 2006 at the Pasadena Playhouse in Pasadena, California, 14 years after the film of the same name was released. The musical appeared back on the stage at the London Palladium in 2009 starring Patina Miller, who was in the ensemble of the original 2006 production. When an adaptation of the show opened on Broadway in 2011, Patina reprised the role. Since then, Sister Act has played in numerous countries across the world, has been translated into eight languages, and has been seen by over six million people.

This production has been reworked by Jamie Wilson and Whoopi Goldberg to specifically change the main character, Deloris Van Cartier. In past productions, Deloris has been portrayed by a 23-year-old, but they wanted to make her older. By changing her age, they’re able to change the stakes and adapt the character in a way that’s not been done before. Deloris now has the room to be more irreverent and funnier.

A recap on the Sister Act story

Based on the 1992 film starring Whoopi Goldberg, this musical is an absolutely fabulous tribute to the powers of friendship, sisterhood and the music that brings them together. This hilarious story follows a disco diva by the name of Deloris Van Cartier who witnesses a murder thus turning her life upside down. She is taken into protective custody and hidden where no one would think to look for her - a convent! Under the watch of a suspicious Mother Superior, Deloris is disguised as a nun and bonds with her sisters through the power of song. Whilst helping them find their voices she unexpectedly rediscovers her own.

Who’s in the outstanding creative team?

Sister Act features music from none other than the Tony and 8-time Oscar Award-winning composer Alan Menken. He’s most popularly known for his spectacular scores for Disney, including Aladdin, The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast. He is also known for composing scores for musical theatre, some of which were adaptations from his Disney films, as well as Little Shop of Horrors (1982), for which he also composed the score for the 1986 film.

Whoopi Goldberg and Jamie Wilson are producing this adaptation and we couldn’t be more pleased about it! Whoopi Goldberg is one of few entertainers to have won an Emmy Award, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony Award. Goldberg has starred in some of the most iconic films, which of course include Sister Act and its sequel, which saw her become the highest-paid actress at the time. Jamie, on the other hand, set up his own production company at the age of 19 and has since produced over 50 productions. Jamie was listed among the top 100 most influential people and partnerships in the theatre industry by The Stage in 2019 for the second year in a row. This year sees Jamie as the lead producer in three musicals in London, including On Your Feet! (London Coliseum), Nativity! The Musical (Eventim Apollo) and White Christmas (Dominion Theatre).
