What’s closing in London Theatre this month? (September 2019)

Updated on 16 September 2019

It’s the start of a new season and time to head back to school, but with all the new starts that September is bringing, we still must wave goodbye to some wonderful West End shows! Family favourites like Where is Peter Rabbit? and Peter Pan will be closing their doors to make way for the new. The theatre world is in constant change and whilst that’s a big part of its culture, we still get sad to see shows leave. Read below to see what shows are closing in September and be sure to hurry and get your tickets to your favourites and your must-sees before it’s too late.

Equus (closing 7 September)
This thrilling show has had the West End utterly gripped this summer and it’s almost time for this epic revival to close its doors. This 5-star production has certainly been the must-see show since it transferred to London’s Trafalgar Studios following its hugely successful run at Theatre Royal Stratford East. The award-winning director Ned Bennett is a brilliant asset to the revival of Peter Shaffer’s masterpiece, impressing critics and the company equally (which you can read about in my Q&A with the Equus cast here). Tickets for Equus won’t hang around long as it heads into its final week, and with tickets from just £29 they’re proving to still be the hot ticket in London theatre. Don’t miss this chair gripping, jaw-dropping psychological play and book tickets whilst you still can!

Bitter Wheat (closing 21 September)
The Garrick Theatre is home, for just a few more weeks, to Olivier Award and Pulitzer Prize winner David Mamet’s provocative new production. Here is your reminder to get your tickets to Bitter Wheat and see Hollywood superstar John Malkovich live on stage. Following the huge scandal that ended some Hollywood big shots’ careers, this new drama shines a spotlight on the sexual assault allegations that kicked off the #MeToo movement. Malkovich plays a fictional character, Barney Fein, based upon real people who were involved in the scandal. The world premiere of this fascinating new play is completely unmissable so be sure to book your tickets today to ensure you don’t miss out!

The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole (closing 28 September)
Everyone’s favourite intellectual, aged 13 and 3/4, has been entertaining the West End at the Ambassador’s Theatre with his fascinating diary and of course his completely brilliant poetry. Based on Sue Townsend’s best-selling, beloved novel, this misunderstood protagonist has been uniting the generations, from the original readers of his diaries to a whole new audience set to discover Adrian. This hilarious and yet clueless teenager struggles with all the normal teenaged things; dysfunctional parents, school bullies, huge spots and of course the unrequited love of the new girl in class. Tickets for The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole will certainly please the whole family and thankfully there’s still time to catch this heart-warming tale of teenaged woes.

The Night of the Iguana (closing 28 September)
A chance to see Clive Owen live on stage and a chance to see one of Tennessee Williams’ greatest plays? Sounds almost too good to be true but you can get The Night of the Iguana tickets from just £21 and witness greatness in person! Owen and the star-studded cast have been mesmerizing audiences’ night after night this summer at London’s Noel Coward Theatre and there’s still time to catch this remarkable production, directed by James Macdonald (Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf) and with a set designed by multi-award-winning designer Rae Smith. Take a trip to 1940’s Mexico and be immersed in this show as a group of travellers come together at a hotel ahead of an intense tropical storm. It may sound like the butt of a joke when an ex-minister, an underage girl, and an ageing poet all come together but it is instead an intense battle between body and soul; everyone uncertain of what is to come.
