What’s On The West End Stage in 2015?

Posted on 30 January 2015

I must start this post and be honest with you all: this might be one of the most exciting blog posts I have ever written. I made one of these for my own blog last year and it is so thrilling to take a look ahead at the amazing theatre coming to London in the year. So, for those of you who aren’t as clued up as others, or for those of you that are just intrigued to hear more and for a little bit of clarity behind rumours, here’s my pick of the top 5 most exciting West End openings that we’ll be seeing in 2015.

Gypsy at the Savoy Theatre
I’m sure we’ve all heard the very exciting news that Gypsy is getting its first ever London revival this year staring none other than Imelda Staunton as Mamma Rose, a role she originated at the Chichester Festival Theatre. It was unfortunate that I couldn’t get to the short run they had in Chichester because I did plan a trip, but I’m so excited for the show to come into London later this year! One of my all time favourite classic musicals, Gypsy, starts previews at the Savoy Theatre 28th March with opening night on April 15th.

Bend It Like Beckham at the Phoenix Theatre
A new British musical based on one of the best Noughties movies ever made I hear you cry!? Tell me it’s not true (and if you get how well thought out that pun was then gold star to you). Yes, that’s right, original film creator Gurinder Chandra is bringing her movie Bend It Like Beckham to the West End next year (finally!) as a musical! Following the story of an Indian girl who is shamed for wanting to play football like her British friend, this harrowing story of dreams, love and friendship will start scoring goals in May with previews beginning on May 15th and official opening night on June 24th.

The Elephant Man at the Theatre Royal, Haymarket
Does this transfer need an introduction? It was announced last week that the incredible revival of one of the most touching plays of all time is heading across the pond after it closes on Broadway next month and they’re bringing their star with them! The show (staring Bradley Cooper) follows the life and times of the man who was born half man, half elephant. A limited 12 week run begins at the Theatre Royal, Haymarket on May 19th.

Beautiful: The Carole King Musical at the Aldwych Theatre
As a massive fan of Carole King and the original Broadway production of this show, I have been excited for this transfer from the moment it was announced (so much so that I booked tickets to go on my birthday/March 2nd the morning tickets were released!) The show follows the interesting story of songwriter-turned-megastar Carole King through her iconic music catalogue and is a perfect mix of jukebox musical and proper West End Theatre. The show starts previews February 10th with official opening night on February 24th.

Kinky Boots rumoured to be at the Adelphi Theatre
After our hearts shattered into thousands of little pieces at the news that Made in Dagenham closes its doors this April, it wasn’t long until a new West End secret leaked... A casting call revealed that the new Kinky Boots London 2015 will strut into the Adelphi Theatre with previews starting on or around August 21st. No other news yet, but it’s finally coming people – it’s coming!
