What is Amadeus about?

Vienna, 1820. A confession, and a rivalry that changed music forever.

Antonio Salieri has everything: status, success and the respect of Vienna’s elite. Then he meets Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart – a young musical genius whose extraordinary talent leaves Salieri convinced that God has chosen the wrong man.

Brilliant, vulgar and utterly unpredictable, Mozart becomes the focus of Salieri’s growing obsession. Unable to rival his genius, Salieri turns his jealousy into a calculated campaign to destroy the man he both worships and despises.

Set to some of the greatest music ever written, Amadeus is a gripping drama of ambition, jealousy, faith and betrayal – exploring the devastating price of greatness and the dangerous lengths one man will go to when faced with genius.

Facts and critical acclaim

• Amadeus won five Tony Awards and the Drama Desk Award when it debuted in 1981. 
• The film adaptation was nominated for 11 Oscars, winning eight of them! The big wins included; best adapted screenplay for playwright Peter Shaffer, best picture and best director.
• Michael Sheen played Mozart in the Old Vic’s production of Amadeus in 1998. His performance earned him one of his four Olivier Award nominations.
