The story of Faustus: That Damned Woman
We all know the stories of people who have sold their souls for fame, power, riches, or all three. But what if you sold your soul to save the world? Hundreds of years ago that’s exactly what Johanna Faustus did.
She watched her city grow sick and suffer and she was determined to restore it. To make the impossible possible, there is a price to be paid, a sacrifice to be made. Johanna made that sacrifice so she could travel the centuries changing the course of history. She might be damned, but she’ll be damned if she lets this world down.
Cast and Creatives of Faustus: That Damned Woman
2011 Brit Writers’ Award winning playwright Chris Bush has recast the Faust myth to imagine what must be sacrificed to achieve the impossible, the legacy that we leave behind and the lengths we would go to in order to spite the devil himself. Bush is perhaps best known for her satirical show TONY! The Blair Musical and its follow up, Tony of Arabia. She was the 2013 Pearson Playwright in Residence for Sheffield Theatres.
Faustus: That Damned Woman is directed by Caroline Byrne. She is known for her production of Portia Coughlan at the Young Vic Theatre and Spring Awakening for Young Vic Unpacked.
Casting for the world premiere and subsequent Birmingham Repertory Theatre run and UK tour has yet to be announced.

This production had poor reviews, therefore my expectations were not high, this was probably a good thing as consequently I thoroughly enjoyed the romp through history that ensued. Faustus as a female was an interesting concept and cast an interesting reflective light on proceedings, the action moved a little fast, was a little jumpy and uneven, in particular the 'wine men/women and song' part, which flashed by. On the whole an interesting and stimulating evening

Tour de force by Jodie McNee. Jodie is on stage for the entire show and your eyes never leave her. This is a great version of Faustus
A truly excellent evening that challenged me. It was profound as well as humorous. It was one of those theatre experiences that you never forget and keep thinking about for days and days after. I loved it. The theatre was really comfortable too.

Lyric theatre is a hidden gem. Amazingly beautiful venue in an unexpected area. Faustus has an utterly fabulous set, atmospheric, great cast - let down a little by a eclectic plot that takes a while to get going. Enjoyable none the less
I really enjoyed the play, I particularly though the acting was exceptional. Jodie McNee was absolutely brilliant. it was an interesting concept which worked to have a female lead and set it in the context of lack of opportunities which society gives (or gave) to women. the use of elizabeth garrett anderson &I marie curie as historic role models worked very well.
Good acting, great set.
Nice direction, good script, wonderful costumes and scenery, great actors!
Really impressed but modern take on such a classic, really enjoyed use of lighting and effects however disappointed that the ending was anticlimactic in comparison to this
