Eifman Ballet returns to the London Coliseum this December with the UK premiere of Artistic Director Boris Eifman’s awe-inspiring ballet Up & Down featuring the invigorating music of George Gershwin, Franz Schubert and Alban Berg. This special visit will also be a celebration of the internationally renowned Company’s 40th anniversary.
“Up & Down is a tragic and bright chronicle of a person’s spiritual death. The story about how a dream of happiness turns into a disaster, and an externally beautiful and carefree life flowing to the rhythms of jazz – into a nightmare.” Boris Eifman
“… there is no better story-telling choreographer around today.“
Graham Watts, Dance Tabs (on Up & Down, St Petersburg, 2015)
Based on the 1934 F. Scott Fitzgerald novel ‘Tender Is the Night’, Up & Down follows the rise and fall of a promising young psychoanalyst and one of his patients; presenting the bizarre kaleidoscope of obsessions, fears and fragments of patients’ minds. The characters’ own ups and downs masterfully recreated by Boris Eifman and his dancers. Set in the Jazz Age – the piece evokes the unstoppable feast of life; the era of freedom, sensuality, and hedonism.
Eifman Ballet was established by Boris Eifman in 1977 and is one of the world’s largest non-classical ballet Companies. Distinguished by its technique, dedication and high onstage intelligence, the Company is renowned among ballet fans the world over for works such as Tchaikovsky, Anna Karenina, Eugene Onegin, Rodin, Requiem and Red Giselle.
Prior to its London run, Up & Down will be visiting St Petersburg, Monte Carlo and Israel.

Boris Eifman - one of the leading Russian choreographers. Each of his ballet has an original libretto, unique choreography and perfectly matched music!
An exciting new way of discovering the art of circus.
A great show with a very good and expressive choreography, Boris Eifman and the St Petersburg company set the story in a stylish and original way. An outstanding performance with a great cast that brings grace and elegance to the original story. A show not to be missed and that's aiming to be set apart.
My group of four people thoroughly enjoyed the production. The two leads were superb. The ballerina was especially astounding in terms of both her core strength and her interpretation of what was a challenging role.
Fantastic performance. Magnificent work.
Some excellent dancing but the storytelling is a little disjointed and dosent quite pull of the promise of the production.
I enjoyed "Up and Down" very much. The dancing was of a very high order and linked beautifully to the very imaginative and varied choice of music. The stage sets and costumes were also excellent.
Unusual and beautiful ballet lines, but morbid. Lovely theatre.
