Jesus Christ Superstar has returned to London in a major revival that reunites Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber's groundbreaking rock musical with a new generation of theatre fans. Following a celebrated run at Regent's Park Open Air Theatre, a Barbican transfer and an international tour, the production plays at the London Palladium before transferring to Theatre Royal Drury Lane later this year.
With Eurovision star Sam Ryder leading the cast as Jesus, a rotating line-up of celebrity guest stars playing King Herod, and more than 50 years of musical theatre history behind it, here's everything you need to know before booking.
What Is Jesus Christ Superstar About?
Spoilers ahead! Jesus Christ Superstar follows the final days of Jesus Christ through the eyes of Judas Iscariot, exploring friendship, faith, celebrity and betrayal. Rather than presenting a traditional biblical retelling, the musical focuses on the people surrounding Jesus and the growing tensions that lead to his arrest and crucifixion.
Alongside Jesus and Judas, the story explores the roles of Mary Magdalene, Pontius Pilate and King Herod, asking timeless questions about power, belief and sacrifice. The result is a poignant interpretation that has continued to resonate with audiences for more than five decades.
Jesus Christ Superstar London: From the London Palladium to Theatre Royal Drury Lane
The current revival plays at the London Palladium until Saturday 5 September 2026 before transferring to Theatre Royal Drury Lane from 16 October 2026 until 9 January 2027.
This marks the production's return to London after first opening at Regent's Park Open Air Theatre in 2016. Since then, it has transferred to the Barbican and toured internationally, making this tenth anniversary season a fitting homecoming.
Sam Ryder Stars as Jesus
Singer-songwriter Sam Ryder makes his West End debut as Jesus after winning millions of fans during the Eurovision Song Contest, where he finished as runner-up for the United Kingdom in 2022.
Ryder recently shared that his journey to the role began unexpectedly during a recording session with Andrew Lloyd Webber in 2023. After spending the day working on an entirely different project, he asked if they could finish by playing ‘Gethsemane’ together around the piano. Looking back, Ryder has joked that the impromptu performance may have become the most unexpected audition of his career. Three years later, he's leading one of musical theatre's most celebrated roles.
In our review, we described the production as "a revival worth worshipping at the altar of musical theatre," praising Ryder's soaring vocals and emotionally rich performance. Read our full Jesus Christ Superstar review and discover more about Sam Ryder's West End debut.
The Celebrity King Herods
One of the biggest talking points of this revival is its ever-changing cast of celebrity guest stars as King Herod. Instead of one performer playing the role throughout the run, different stars appear for limited engagements, giving audiences a fresh experience depending on when they visit.
During the London Palladium season, the role is shared by Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Richard Armitage, Boy George, Layton Williams and Julian Clary.
When the production transfers to Theatre Royal Drury Lane, the guest casting continues with Matt Bomer, Rob Brydon, Reece Shearsmith, Bob the Drag Queen, Michael Ball, Simon Russell Beale, Omid Djalili and Layton Williams, with one final guest star still to be announced.

The History of Jesus Christ Superstar
Before it became a stage musical, Jesus Christ Superstar began life as a concept album released in 1970 by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. Songs including Superstar, Heaven on Their Minds, I Don't Know How to Love Him and Gethsemane helped launch the musical before it even reached the stage.
The show opened on Broadway in 1971 before arriving in the West End the following year. Initially controversial for its modern retelling of the Passion story, it has since become one of the world's most frequently performed musicals.
Why Is Jesus Christ Superstar Still So Popular?
More than 50 years after it premiered, Jesus Christ Superstar remains one of musical theatre's most influential works. Its rock score still feels fresh, while its exploration of faith, fame, politics and public opinion continues to spark discussion.
Whether audiences come for Andrew Lloyd Webber's music, **Tim Rice'**s lyrics or simply to experience one of the defining musicals of the twentieth century, each revival finds new relevance.
