The West End has been a haven of girl power in 2019 with the likes of Six featuring Henry VIII’s wives who go from being queens to pop princesses to tell their “herstory”, Waitress with an all-female creative team, and this is just the beginning. Later this year & Juliet will come to the Shaftesbury Theatre to tell you what would have happened if at the end of Shakespeare’s tragedy, Juliet put down the dagger and got a life. The all-new musical is a story of self-discovery and explored with the aid of some of the best pop songs of our generation. All the music featured in & Juliet comes from one man, one genius, Max Martin, and here are our top 5 favourites.
5. Can’t Feel My Face
You probably know this Max Martin pop smash-hit from Canadian singer The Weeknd. The song was released as the third single from his album ‘Beauty Behind the Madness’ and peaked at number one in the US Billboard Hot 100 and the Canadian Hot 100. It also received number one in numerous countries and was a top 10 single here in the UK. The song was both written and produced by Max Martin and was released in 2015 by The Weeknd, ranking as the best song of 2015 by Rolling Stone. Amongst the critical acclaim it received, it was also nominated for two Grammy Awards. ‘Can’t Feel My Face’ is already a certified hit, popular with critics and the wider public alike, but & Juliet is going to give it a lease of life that will only make you love it more.
4. Everybody (Backstreet’s Back)
It’s safe to say that everybody knows this super upbeat 90s tune from the international sensation boyband, Backstreet Boys. This was possibly one of the biggest songs of the decade and is still a classic today. It was written and produced by Max Martin and marked the comeback of the Backstreet Boys with their second international album. It was perhaps made even more popular by the iconic video, aiding the song in being certified platinum in both the US and the UK. As we already know from the music video, this song is already a great prop for a huge theatrical scene and it’s definitely one to look forward to for when & Juliet takes to the stage.
3. …Baby One More Time
Even those who say they don’t love Britney Spears’ ‘…Baby One More Time’ actually love it. Whether this song is a guilty pleasure or not, it was one of the biggest songs of the late 90s. It was written and produced by Max Martin and was the debut single from Britney’s debut album of the same name. The single launched her career and saw her reach superstardom after the song made double platinum in the UK and was the best-selling song in the country in 1999. It also reached number one in at least another 17 countries. It’s only right that a song from one of the biggest pop princesses of our time should be featured in this girl power musical.
2. It’s My Life
Bon Jovi is one of the biggest American rock bands ever and ‘It’s My Life’ is arguably one of their biggest hits. Not a pop song like Max Martin’s usual credits but it was in fact written and produced by him. Through the hit song, which reached number one in numerous countries, the band were able to reach a newer and younger fanbase. The Bon Jovi hit remains a widely loved song still today and it’s already guaranteed to have audiences ecstatic when they hear the rendition in & Juliet. This particular number is performed by Romeo played by the brilliant Jordan Luke Gage and his powerhouse vocals are going to see ‘It’s My Life’ blow people away all over again nearly 20 years after it was first released.
1. Roar
Coming in at number one has to be ‘Roar’ by Katy Perry, and not just because it is a brilliant song, but because of the rendition of this hit I saw performed at a & Juliet workshop I attended. This song already screams empowerment, but when you see this incredible version in everyone’s soon to be favourite new musical, along with incredible choreography, you will find yourself finding a whole new appreciation for it. The musical version will be sung by Juliet herself played by Miriam-Teak Lee, who makes this song her own in true leading lady fashion, bringing a whole new power to the song that will take your breath away. This song was in fact co-written by Katy Perry, but it was produced by Max Martin. When it was released in 2013 the song was hugely successful, topping charts all around the world and was certified gold in the US.
