What’s opening in London Theatre this month? (September 2019)

Updated on 16 September 2019

Goodbye summer – hello shiny new theatre shows! As a new season rolls in and the leaves begin to fall from the trees, new casts and crews are moving into the West End’s stunning theatres to kick start London’s new productions. There are BIG shows coming and superstars are on their way from the likes of Ian McKellen to multi-talented threat Mica Paris. Exciting new shows are on the way; read below to find out what’s coming to the West End and when…

Big The Musical (opens 10 September 2019)
Coming to London’s spectacular Dominion Theatre is the West End debut of Big The Musical starring The Wanted’s Jay McGuiness. Popularly known as the 80s classic film of the same name that starred Hollywood star Tom Hanks, this beloved story is set to come to life live on stage; and yes, it will feature the gigantic piano we all dreamed of as a child. The story follows 12-year-old Josh who thinks being a kid is boring, but when his wish is granted by a fortune-telling machine at a carnival to be big. Will Josh find being grown-up all he hoped it to be? This musical is going to feature lively numbers, lots of colour and of course, big fun! Book by the 21 September and save up to £53 on Big The Musical tickets!

Fame (opens 11 September)
You’ll certainly remember the name of this show after you see it! Fame The Musical tickets are available now for this special 30th-anniversary production. The UK tour is ending at London’s Peacock Theatre and we’re excited to dance in our seats following their opening on 11 September. Based on the 1980 hit film, the story follows students at New York’s School for the Performing Arts who learn both on and off stage. The cast consists of Keith Jack (Any Dream Will Do, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat), Mica Paris (Chicago) and Jorgie Porter (Hollyoaks). Read the Q&A we conducted with the cast following a sneak peek of the show we were lucky to witness ahead of the London transfer.

Groan Ups (opens 20 September)
Mischief Theatre are also going back to school this September with a new show from the theatre company that brought you The Play That Goes Wrong and The Comedy About A Bank Robbery. This is their first new show since 2016 and the start to their year-long residency at the West End’s Vaudeville Theatre. Tickets for Groan Ups are still available for this strictly limited 10-week run and you won’t want to miss out on this soon to be hit. Following their previous smash-hit comedies, it’s a certainty that their new show is going to be groundbreakingly hilarious and imaginative. The company showcase as a group of wild kids on the playground, progressing to rebelling teenagers and then to adults at their school reunion. Does time change them at all and what effect, if any, did their school years have on them?

Ian McKellen On Stage (opens 20 September)
Not all living legends celebrate turning 80 by putting on a one-man show in order to fundraise for theatre and the arts, but Ian McKellen isn’t your average actor. He’s one of the greatest actors of our time, with a whopping 50 years of acting experience under his belt. McKellen has won every major theatrical award there is, not to mention multiple nominations from the likes of the Academy, the Emmys and BAFTA. His vast experiences span from Shakespeare and Beckett to playing the most iconic pop culture characters there are such as Gandalf and Magneto. This phenomenal show is set to be the experience of a lifetime and a true treat for any fan of Sir Ian McKellen and/or any admirer of the arts. Watch as he dazzles with monologues, various characters, a song or two and a chat and gossip in between. It truly is an unmissable show and tickets are selling fast so be sure to secure you Ian McKellen On Stage tickets now.

The Man in the White Suit (opens 26 September)
We often get very excited over transfers and revivals but the excitement around a world premiere is simply electric. Ealing’s classic comedy comes to the West End’s Wyndham’s Theatre, adapted and directed by Sean Foley (The Ladykillers). The Man in the White Suit tickets are going to be in high demand for this eagerly awaited premiere! Following their Olivier Award-winning production Jeeves and Wooster, the comedy duo Stephen Mangan and Sean Foley reunite for this highly anticipated show. Based on the original 1951 film of the same name starring Alec Guinness, the story follows a man, Sidney Stratton (Mangan), who invents a fabric that won’t wear out or get dirty! However, his genius invention is shunned by manufacturers who are scared of what this could mean for their businesses. These bosses put their self-interest first and chase the man in the white suit away.
