About The Pirates of Penzance
This legendary comical opera features a splendidly silly storyline, wild wordplay, and well-loved songs. It follows the story of an apprentice pirate who sets out to woo the Major General's daughter, while his bumbling, clumsy shipmates try to outwit an equally inept party of policemen. The opera which first premiered in 1879, has been revived in a magical and vibrant new staging, that brings out the sunshine in the story.
Facts and Critical Acclaim
- The opera was adapted as a film in 1983 and called The Pirate Movie*, it starred Kevin Kline as the Pirate King* and **Angela Lansbury** as Ruth, the Pirate Maid.
- The Major-General’s song has been called Gilbert and Sullivan’s most famous patter song, it’s referenced in modern-day films and TV shows including *Despicable Me 3.*

Recent Reviews
Excellent performances, some sound lost as we were in the UC tier row K, bit underwhelmed as the orchestra lost some of its sound. Also disappointed there was no encore as traditionally audience participation in this was missing.
Very good enjoying show everyone was very good
As last time we saw this production it was marvellous. The cast and orchestra were on their finest form on a Saturday afternoon. It was so good to see so many children enjoying G&S - long may it last for them!
Great fun. Ideal introduction to light opera for my son.
This was my first time watching this show and I was disappointed. The vocals were quiet for those in the Upper Circle and there was generally a lack of oomph in the performance. I didn't like the staging either. It is a real shame as I loved the production of Pinafore a couple of years ago and was blown away by it. The talent is there; it was just tepid.
I know how hard the cast work to produce a show like this. Sadly, I was disappointed with the sound quality (I stress not the quality of their voices) and really did find it hard to hear the dialogue properly. Thankfully the screen that gave the words to the songs was invaluable, even though I know the songs well this really did help. The orchestra was brilliant! On a more positive note I just love this beautiful theatre! Though the prices for drinks and ice cream was on the expensive side.
Great show. Oozing class and wit. We sat in top tier and at times it was to quite but still impressive.
Pirates of Penzance was a wonderful show. Full of humour and brilliant lyrics.
