Alan Ayckbourn’s hilarious tale of matrimonial mishaps, How the Other Half Loves, directed by Alan Strachan, is moving house to the Duke of York’s Theatre for just 12 weeks!
“Do you realise, Mrs Foster, the hours I’ve put into that woman?”
A story of two couples reminds us - still chillingly up-to-date - of the misfortunes of marriage. Bob and Fiona clumsily try to cover up their extramarital affair. However, their spouses’ intervention only adds to the turmoil as William and Mary Featherstone become stuck in the middle, and additionally, falsely accused of adultery. They seem to be the victims - as they have no idea how they’ve become involved. The plot culminates in two disastrous dinner parties on two following nights, taking place at the same time. After this, the future of all three couples seems in jeopardy…
The superstar cast includes Olivier Award nominee Nicholas le Prevost opposite Jenny Seagrove. Jenny starred in Ayckbourn’s Absurd Person Singular in the West End at the Garrick in 2007, and is well known for her role as ‘QC Jo Mills’ in ITV’s Judge John Deed. Jason Merrells - one of TV’s most popular actors from roles in Lark Rise to Candleford, Cutting It and Waterloo Road stars opposite Andrea Lowe famous for playing DS Annie Cabbot in the popular ITV series DCI Banks. Joining them will be Matthew Cottle, from the BAFTA nominated Game On, and most recently seen in Ayckbourn’s A Small Family Business at the National Theatre in 2014 stars opposite Gillian Wright. Gillian is nationally known for her award-winning role as ‘Jean Slater’ in EastEnders.
Fondly loved as one of his most popular plays, Ayckbourn’s tale of social graces and personal misunderstanding remains one of the celebrated writer’s most famous comedies.

One if not the funniest productions we have ever seen. The cast were superb the venue good and as we purchases last minute tickets good value. This was the second time we saw this show in three months as it was so memorably good
I thought Nick Le Prevost was awesome…Jenny Seagrove was pretty good with a non too sympathetic part…however the rest of the cast seemed to be pleased to be nearing the end of the run & had opted to go for big laughs with over the top acting. A pity as the is a tricky little play - which suffers from being outdated. Hard to feel for the slobby couple & both off them were mis-cast in my opinion. To get to understand their relationship one needs cracking casting. Not last night - not ever with these average actors. However nearly worth the price of the ticket to see Nick L P on song. I wonder when the director last had a look at this production?
Good actors but the play never becomes funny, though it keeps getting close to it...

The show was very good and we enjoyed it !. We have not had stalls seats in a long time so found the view a bit poor

Just a tremendous evening at the theatre. Just loved the play which we hadn't seen before. Thanks to the producers who revived it, the actors who embodied it so fully and of course to Ayckborn for being Ayckborn.
Brilliant play. Fun and surprising storyline. Well performed and very enjoyable!
I saw this play many years ago with Robert Morley in the lead role. It was perfect for his style of theater. Understandably, things had to be updated for today. But,this current production doesn't compare with yesterday's. I think that Ayckbourne rwrote several plays just for Morley and they were brilliant, superbly preformed and very enjoyable. Without Morley, the plays lack the element only Morley could achieve.
